About West Downtown (Kujo, Horie, Kyomachibori area)
Fast facts
Where in Osaka is it?
Namba and Shinsaibashi are Osaka's iconic downtown areas, featuring flashy neon signs and giant billboards. West Downtown is located to the western side of that area and extends north to Kyomachibori, where you will find the lush greenery of Utsubo Park. It has excellent access to both of Osaka's two major districts, Minami and Kita.
What is the area like?
Horie is a place where everyday local life and sophisticated boutiques blend together. Kyomachibori is home to unique shops and offices, mainly around Utsubo Park, where colorful roses bloom. The warmth of the old downtown atmosphere of Kujo remains, and while there are bustling shopping districts close by, the area has a relaxed atmosphere that hums with the daily lives of the locals.
What are the highlights of the area?
Tachibana-dori (Orange Street) is the main street of Horie, lined with stylish shops. The street is also noteworthy for its historic furniture stores, having been home to furniture shops since the end of the Edo period. Kyomachibori centers around the spacious Utsubo Park with its beautiful zelkova trees and soothing rose garden. The shopping street just outside Kujo Station is full of independent stores with distinctive styles. A visit to these neighborhoods will help you connect to local life and culture.
How to enjoy West Downtown
This is a local area where many people live and work. Take a leisurely walk without setting a destination, or enjoy chatting with store owners at small independent businesses – it's a great way to immerse yourself in the city.
